Digipack Look
The above link clearly shows what a digipack at level 4 will look like. This will help me in the design process of the pack thus hopefully making it more effective and of better quality. It also allows me to see the level & the standard that i must work too in order to acheive a level 4 product.
Student Riot as a moral panic
Article link here >>> http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1332811/TUITION-FEES-PROTEST-Students-streets-girls-leading-charge.html
The students who have been reported to be mainly female that created the student riot over tuition fees have been represented in the The Daily Mail in an extremely negative way even the title/headline of the article shows this. “Rage of the girl rioters: Britain’s students take to the streets again and this time women are leading the charge” this is used in order to hook consumers to read the story as they use the terms such as rage and girls which stereotypical is a male dominated reference to being aggressive. It also states with the quote "this time" that it has happened before and thus will keep happening so in other words the media are trying to create a moral panic which is a theory by Stanley Cohen that i produced a post on earlier stating how the media fashions these episodes by stylising them and amplifying the effects making them into a national problem when they could of been keep under control quite easily. However the media may be using this moral panic as they call it to cover up the reason why the students are rioting as that point isn't well explained within the article. The media even go as far as to represent the riot as a war by using the word charge with in most peoples mind will remind them of a group of soldiers charging into battle thus suggesting that the students are causing mass destruction.
Another example of what Stanley Cohen theory moral panics explains would be "Dancing in the streets" this puts in my mind almost a gang cultural or that of a cult when people dance around camp fires which is labelled as a type of negative behaviour and is even represented in horror films such as "The hills have eyes" This then makes the group seem to be worse then they actually are and almost as villains thus creating a negative view of the social group which in this case are students who are labelled. Which will then cause them to have a self fulling prophecy which means if a group is labelled a certain way then they will live up to that label which in turn will cause what the media created, a moral panic.
Using the theory of cultural hegemony by Gramsci 1930 which states that various social classes or groups have more authority over another person or group for example parents have authority over their children while the police have authority over the parents. So in this case with the tuition fees rising students are going to be less likely to afford their place at a university with most not being in a high class thus able to afford to go. This obviously means that the students will do whatever they can to get the decision to change so they almost reject the cultural hegemony and turn in on its head by fighting back with their riots. "Scotland Yard deployed more than 1,500 officers seven times the number on November 10 to control hordes of students smashing windows of government buildings and scrawling graffiti on the walls" this shows the idea that because the positions of power have changed the police must get reinforcements in order to calm the students thus showing the power change. It also shows that police officers are going to combat the students by force thus trying to take back their power which Gramsci states.
My final example is by Eldrige 1997 who states that the media reproduce the definitions of the powerful so in other words they only represent the ruling classes ideologies. The quote that i am going to use is probably one of the most graphic ones within the article "a female police officer suffered a broken hand and another officer had to be dragged out from a cordon with leg injuries" This quotation tries to make the students to appear to have no limits due to the fact that they hurt a female which is stereotypical a negative view as they are seen as innocent and vulnerable. We can see from this final point that the daily mail article had tried to represent students in a negative light while staying clear of the reasons that they caused a riot in the first place this suggests that they follow the ideologies of the government and thus take the attention away from their negative press by trying to cause a moral panic with the students to blame.

Focus on identity requires us to pay close attention to the diverse ways in which media & technologies are used in everyday life & their consequences in everday life both for individuals and for social groups. In other words people behave differently when they are with certain people such as:
-family
-friends
-work mates
-bosses
-age groups
-class groups
Gaunlett
Each of us would link to think to some extent that we have special personal qualities which make us distincitive & valuable to the other people in our lives. But does that mean anything? Is individuality just an illusion? Maybe we are all incrediably similar but are programmed to value minscule bits of differenation e.g.) football matches as people wear the same clothes and most behave in an agressive manner even if they dont usually behave that way due to the situation they are in as well as the people that are with during that moment.
Even Jimmy from Quadrophena has four personalities due to the title meaning quad as four then the other a shortened version of a multi personality disorder:
-the tough guy who is argumentative
-the romantic when with female characters
-the lunatic usually when hes with the mods
-the begger which is when he is at work
Burden in representation
For example Koop in Human traffic:
-sociable & happy
-says the word niggers which is a sterotypical nickname for black people although usually it is seen as negative
-dances with the soundtrack which links to a common view that black people can dance well
-care free attitude at work
-lies to sell record
-meet him in a lit room so he seems to be light hearted
Ferdy:
-swears a lot
-dresses like a ganster in dark clothes
-sells drugs
-presented negativly
-slaves as used for drugs
-seen in a dark alleyway thus seems like a shady character
Goffman
abstract ways of thinking about identity that we also employ every day, the clothes they wear and the media we consume & the people we like. This is called the presentation of self which argues that people can be labelled negatively and can be victimised because of their apperance as people tend to make assumptions.

Moral Panic
What is a moral Panic?:
It was Stanley Cohen 1987 who first came up with the term moral panics. He defined it as a condition, episode, person or group who become defined as a threat to societal values and interests due to their representation within the media e.g.) mods & rockers. Cohen also points out that the media sometimes stylises these episodes amplifying the nature of the facts and consequently turning them into a national issue thus making them worse than they needed to be as they could of been contained at a local level. A quote shows this factor well which is about "making a mountain out of molehill"
Cohen's study originated from his interest in the youth culture and its perceived potential threat to social order. Throughout each era, a group has emerged who fits the criteria that Cohen has labelled as being turned into a moral panic or a threat, such as Skinheads, Hells Angels etc. They all become associated with negative aspects usually violence, which in turn also provoke public reaction usually calling for a police presence within the community of where the event took place.
Moral panic examples include the following:
-football hooliganism
-drug abuse
-vandalism
-video nasties
-aids
-knife crime
There are various ways in which these moral panics/issues are dealt with. Generally they pass as quickly as they came and are long forgotten when the media begins to write about other news as the moral panic isn't published no more thus sparking less interest in the subject and making it less of an issue. However some moral panic last for years even sparking riots such as aids which was labelled as the gay plague resulting in insults t homosexual public.
An Example of a Moral Panic:
An example of a moral panic would be the torture and murder of James Bulger whick took place in the early 1990 causing a moral panic known as the paedophile scare. It is not hard to see why people were so upset over this case and why newspapers covered the story aggressively resulting in a panic. As many commentators tried to state that the murder of James Bulger was a gruesome act which was somehow characteristic in modern British society, despite the fact that various figures show that such child murders being killed by other children are extremely rare.
However children have in the past killed other children yet what is different about this case is the media input which resulted in national reactions to the event. For example Mary Bell who was eleven at the time killed two toddlers in 1968 but instead of covering it the media chose to ignore it, which in turn resulted in public rejection of it as a cause for panic due to low coverage of the incident.
The media used the case of James Bulger to symbolise all that was wrong with Britain with one paper quoting ‘it’s an evil world and we need strict rules’ about the two boys who killed James. Explanations for why the crime took place weren’t discussed within the media instead they chose to focus on the difference between innocence and evil. Even a moral message was brought out from the Guardian newspaper which said and I quote “we are all guilty, and we must make sure it never happens again”
This shows that the cultural hegemony model has been used by the media to make the viewers/readers/public take on their believes and ideologies thus resulting in various rules to be carried out and other regulations to be announced. Now that the media had highlighted and presented to the public so many issues of moral and societal concern no one said anything in opposition to a series of solutions that were mainly produced by the government.
This included:
- The installation of more surveillance cameras as they had been vital in showing who the kidnappers were.
- Banning of violent films as the belief was that the video Child’s Play III which the boys watched was believed to have been the reason that they carried outt the attack by mimicking a scene from the film.
This moral panic raised concern that children are now more at risk from child killers in and paedophiles. The press remained constant with this topic even discussing other paedophilia cases with the Guardian saying that police services ignored the scale of the cases and that they were getting bigger each year. The Home Office estimated at the time that up to 110,000 people in Britain had been convicted of sex offences against children and outlines a chronology of the worst offences
Some of these include:
- August 1993: The abduction, rape and manslaughter of 14 year old Jason Swift by Robert Oliver.
- March 1996: Arrest of Roger Saint, a foster father who had served on Clwyd County Council’s adoption panel.
- August 1996: Marc Dutroux arrested by Belgian police.
- July 1997: Brendan Smyth, a Catholic priest convicted of indecent assaults on 20 children.
- August 1997: Public schoolmaster Adrian Stark- committed suicide after being charged with child pornography offences.

How are the authority figures represented in human traffic?
However the scene also shows a problem with the model known as cultural hegemony which believes that one social group dominates over the rest and thus their ways are seen as the norm (Gramsei 1930), as Mort rejects his fathers dominance when he has been told to leave. That said the character does end up leaving the house during the argument so in a way due to his anger he conforms to his fathers control when trying to reject it. This could suggest that society is seen as having a lot of power and so like Mort even if you try to run away from it you will still be under its control/influence.
Another scene could be the one with jip and his mother which shows the cultural hegemony quite well. This is shown when Jip tells the audience that he doesn't really want to see his mother yet at the end of his speech he walks into the house. This shows that although he shows clear dislike for having to see his mother he still does thus meaning that he cant disobey the control very easily.
The mothers flat is stereotypical for a women that age and makes her seem like she is going to be well dressed and of a high class with a well paid job. For example, she has a long coat and a suitcase laying on the chair when Jip first walks in. However in reality she breaks this stereotype of all of those factors as she is wearing a pink dressing gown and works as a prostitute. That said allow by her job and way of life she is seen as passive to society she still has control as she can dominate her son.

Location list
Graveyard scene where the female character sits next to a grave. This is used to show the audience quite easily that the reason the lead character is crying is that her parent is dead.

Bedroom scene where the female is looking through photographs of her mother and herself showing that she is thinking of her memories that she has. Thus this allows the video to flow as it tells the audience that the next scenes within the clip are memories.

The kitchen scene where a memory is shown between the mother and the daughter thus showing how ill she was yet how happy they were.

The living room scene where another memory is shown yet this time the mother is shown to be even more ill but putting on a brave face for the daughter. It is also used to have the main character and her mother singing along with the lyrics.

The park scene where the female drops the letter from the book and lets it fall to the floor allowing the viewers to see the letter burn. This shows who died as the letter is signed by the mother thus letting the audience know exactly what happened along with the graveyard scene.

Human traffic and The models
Human Traffic is a metaphor for both the models because of the use of drugs for example two females are seen within a club being interviewed and are viewed at having a good time and being confident due to the use of drugs however the reporter doesn't find them fun at all showing the contrast between two types of people. The people that take drugs and the people that don't. Even the characters in the movie talk about a confidence boost saying that they can talk to complete strangers easily yet only under the influence of drugs. Due to this statement the audience (according to the model) will believe that taking drugs is an alright thing to do as the characters seem to be having a great time.
Then again near the end of the film shows that the use of these substances can effect the characters negatively after use and suffer from symptoms such as:
- having that low down feeling after a high making them feel worse about themselves before they started.
- seeing things that aren't there e.g) one of the characters thinks that his friend is flirting with his girlfriend
- slight anger issues
Human traffic can however also be a metaphor for the gratifications model which viewpoint is that the idea of drug use can be over thrown and can be looked at as a fine thing to do by over throwing the dangers of taking drugs as mainly only the positive effects of drugs are shown. For example its not until the end where one of the characters goes a bit crazy when the audience start what drugs can do to you.
However the producers never show the characters actually taking the drugs the audience are left to assume that they are as some of the them are seen smoking and due to the characters taking drugs all of the time we assume that they are drugs even though they might not be. This may be trying to stop being from copying the film and taking drugs as in reality the producers of the film doesn't want drug use to be a global thing but rather wants people to see the positive side to them as most people think negatively of them.

Storyboard version 2 (updated)
Human Traffic - Drug Use
I think in Human traffic does encourage drug use because during a scene in the club two female characters have an interview where they interact easily and laugh alot showing the fun that the pair are entitled to. Thus the audience can view the amount of fun they have as a group plus the main characters speak about drugs saying quite clearly that they can socialise with strangers easily which they wouldn’t normally do when not under the influence of drugs.
The audience can clearly see how much fun they have by the confidence they share when under the influence and the partying mood showing that they are enjoying themselves. They are however all shown doing the drugs together meaning that for their friend group it is the norm. This i feel is stereotypical to the social class that the group all come from which is working and to the age of the group which is late teens early twenties.
Although the group seem to have a good time, one member of them suffers for paranoia near the end of the film showing what the drugs can do to the group if they are taken for years trying to give the audience a moral story within the media text. This shows that the producers of the film aren't trying to glamorise the use of drugs but are trying to show that they aren't all good as people of their age state.
However the producers of the film never actually show the group taking drugs instead they let the audience assume it. For example one character is seen smoking and due to it not being a straight naturally the audience assume it to contain drugs even though no evidence is given.
The theory behind this is known as the hypodermic syringe model. This theory argues that the audience is doped by what they see on the media and are influenced straight away taking in the ideologies this it can almost hypnotise consumers. The theory supports the movie however i do feel that because the producers don't actually show the use of drugs then the audience wont be as affected by it due to the syringe model stating that they need to see what they would then copy thus they are trying to counter this yet still show the effects of drugs.

Jamie Bulger
CCTV evidence from the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle taken on 12 February 1993 showed two young boys casually observing children, apparently selecting a target. Throughout the day, Thompson and Venables were seen stealing various items including sweets, a troll doll, some batteries and a can of blue paint, some of which were found at the murder scene obviously being bought for the murder in question. It was later revealed by one of the boys that they were planning to find a child to abduct, lead him to the busy road alongside the mall, and push him into the path of oncoming traffic.
That same afternoon, James Bulger went with his mother to the New Strand Shopping Centre. At around 3:40pm, Denise realized that her son had disappeared. He had been left at the door of the shop while she placed an order, and was spotted by Thompson and Venables, they approached him and spoke to him, before taking him by the hand and leading him out of the precinct.
The boys took Bulger on a 2.5-mile walk across Liverpool, leading him to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal where he was dropped on his head and suffered injuries to his face. During the walk across Liverpool, the boys were seen by 38 people, Bulger had a bump on his forehead and was crying, but most bystanders did nothing to intervene, assuming that he was a younger brother. Two people challenged the older boys, but they claimed that Bulger was a younger brother or that he was lost and they were taking him to the local police station. Eventually the boys led Bulger to a railway line where they attacked him.
At the trial it was established that at this location, one of the boys threw blue Humbrol modelling paint into Bulger's left eye. They kicked him and hit him with bricks, stones and a 22-pound iron bar before they placed batteries in his mouth. Bulger suffered ten skull fractures as a result of the iron bar striking his head. Alan Williams, the case's pathologist, speculated that Bulger suffered so many injuries that none could be isolated as the fatal blow. Police suspected that there was a sexual element since Bulger's shoes, trousers and underpants had been removed. The pathologist's report read out in court stated that Bulger's foreskin had been manipulated.
Before they left him, the boys laid Bulger across the railway tracks and weighted his head down with rubble, in the hope that a train would hit him and make his death appear to be an accident. After Bulger's killers left the scene, his body was cut in half by a train. Bulger's severed body was discovered two days later, on 14 February, he had died before the train hit him.
The boys were charged with Bulger's murder on 20 February 1993, and appeared at South Sefton Youth Court on 22 February 1993, when they were remanded in custody to await trial
Opinion:
My opinion about this event is that the syringe model could explain why this happened yet at the time Childs play three was never proven to have been watched by the boys and was said in court that the two boys hated horror films. This makes me feel that either the boys were influenced by some other means or were simply psychologically disturbed to commit the level of torture that them committed on the two year old.
As I pointed out earlier the torture was so aggressive that they couldn’t find out exactly what blow killed the male or when the toddler actually died although it was before the train. I feel that the parents may of also had an impact because ten year old boys shouldn’t be watching an eighteen certificate film for various reasons, an example of this is that they aren’t fully developed yet. However their parents most of allowed the children to watch the film ignoring the rating so if the syringe model is right then it would have to take into consideration that the parents may think that the film was a good one causing the children to think this as well and thus go and commit a crime similar.
Future:
This event has often been blamed upon the movie Childs play three with the main killer called Chucky who is a psychotic doll with an evil soul inside of him.The film also has become controversial because it has been indirectly linked to the very brutal murder. The two ten year olds were said to have imitated a scene in which one of Chucky's victims is splashed with blue paint. Although these allegations against the film have never been proven, the case has led to some new legislation for video films.
These factors make me believe that the age ratings for horror or thriller films will be increased or will be more limited to who buys them/watches them. The age ratings may also increase making it harder for children to see any horror at all.

MTV Exam
MTV is an American network music channel that is located in New York City when it launched on the day of August 1 in the year 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJs which of course is a play on words from the name DJ which obviously plays music at the events that these VJs. will do this on the program. At one point MTV had a greatly important impact on the music industry and the culture at the time of its earlier release. The show also produced slogans such as "MTV is here" became embedded like an internet link without the public's thought. Both artists and fans found a location for music events, news, and promotions as a dedicated music outlet. The company has spawned various sister sites in America as well as internationally. It is believed to cause moral influences on young people as MTV has tackled issues which include censorship, social activism etc. This has been debated about for many years although the show has been still going strong and started to focus on non music programming since the 1990s which I feel has made them even more successful and increases their impact on today's culture.
Quoted from Wikipedia: "The original purpose of MTV was to be "Music Television," playing music videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, guided by on-air personalities known as VJs, or video jockeys. The original taglines of the channel were "You'll never look at music the same way again," and "On cable. In stereo." Although the concept of playing music videos 24/7 has long been abandoned, MTV US still promotes and plays a limited selection of music videos on its TV channel and website. Internationally, the station continues to support a broad selection of music including 4 channels in the UK that broadcast 23 hours of music video per day"
However the company did slowly reduce the amount of time spent to music videos. Despite efforts to play certain types of music videos MTV only played up to eight hours per day in 2000 while in 2008 saw an average of just three hours of this music which used to be at least 23 hours. The rise of the Internet was believed to be the cause for this problem and resulted in the decline of the videos. MTV's main source of music video programming was total request live that airs four times a week featuring short clips of VJ's and guests. Total request Live aired its last episode in November 2008 as well as the hip hop music video show Sucker Free. I believe that this was done to allow the company to move forward with not just music videos but with all type of entertainment such as internet, TV programs, comedy shows etc.
Some of the channels that are released in the US are as follows which I collected from numerous places:

The company in 2009 has conformed to the well off video site Youtube by creating its own profile and posting their own videos which like the first music video shown on the channel has the original commercials and the black screens between the videos, the videos also show the record information such as year. The following link is posted by a fan although they received the link from MTV, it features the first music videos ever shown on MTV which was Video killed the radio star by the buggles which was a big hit at the time, it also has the same commercials and shows the black screen when back in the days an employee of the company would insert another tape into a VCR. The link is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw6xesXLIAA
Cast List
Sam Hall as her mother
Extras as other family members
Carley Jones as herself
The video relates to the story of the first two characters which is linear so we feel that we need only a few characters. The extras will play the family within the video and the shots of the singer singing in our studio will of course be the actual singer.
Suggested Costumes

For the main two female artists there will be casual clothing such as jeans, t shirts, jumpers etc. One will also wear a blanket although this isn't clothing it will cover the other clothes that she is wearing as this is suppost to signify that the female is ill with some life threatening disease. The other female star who is our actual singer will as i pointed out before be wearing a black dress. I placed this item in the props as well as we will be supplying the dress for our singer, Toni Hall's to be exact.
Suggested Props for Music Video
- obviously the filming equipment such as a camera tripod etc
- a locket which will be one of the main focus points of the clip
- photo frame with a picture of the mother and daughter inside which we will zoom on within the video
- clothing for the actors but that will be the basics and a black dress for our singer to create that Alica Keys look that we feel the song fits
- selection of images which be be located in the bedroom
These are the props so far and i will edit this post if any more are chosen. The ones above are the main key elements or props that we need for the selected image.

Magazine inside Page
The double page spread is from a magazine known as Kerrang who is owned by Bauer Consumer Media and is a rock music production, the name refers to the sound made when playing a power chord on an electric guitar hinting to the audience that it is indeed a music magazine. The main staff who work for the company which I found on the site Wikipedia are as follows: Nichola Browne (editor) Daniel J. Lane (deputy editor, podcasts) Caroline Fish (art editor) Lucy Williams (production editor) Simon Young (news and introducing editor, podcasts) Nick Ruskell (reviews editor) Scarlet Borg (picture editor) Pamela Steuri (designer).
The main text of this double page is of course the first three points which are bold have white backgrounds unlike the rest of the text and has red text for the numbers within the points. This not only attracts the audience but it makes it clear for anyone reading the article that it is fairly important and it makes you want to read on as you want to see why the points are so important and what significance they have to the actual story/event.
It advertises the magazine with the story as the topic that they are talking about is a kerrang tour so the company is almost advertising itself through its own productions that said consumers will still want to read this topic as Kerrang apparently advertise their own gigs etc quite a lot which is why they are fairly successful events.
Various images are show of different artists and bands yet they are all of the same genre showing the audience again what genre they follow rock music. This is clearly visible as the artists all seem to be jumping around of cheering which is the stereotypical atmosphere/appearance of rock singers. The main photo which runs across the top third of the image is fairly dark again hinting at its genre yet the photo shows what the bullet point announces, crazy fans. This is shown by the arms that are reaching forwards toward the main artist.
The bottom left of the double page shows a few of the artists by saying that they were the best bits hinting that the audience should go to one of these events and they will enter the same atmosphere and have a great time although of course they are advertising for the profit of the company growing and earning more money. The magazine is also labeled on the top right of the pages with the name of the gig/event again advertising the magazine even though the audience would bought it already however if a friend was reading the page for gigs then they would see the title and more often than not go out to buy it of they liked the event. The double spread seems to be big on advertising the event a lot to provide advertising and entertaining. The magazine is aimed for teenagers and early twenties yet is for more die hard rock fans than someone who likes a few rock songs here and there.
Magazine Cover
The magazine cover that I am going to study is of the highly known brand Vibe. It is owned by a man known as Quincy Jones and features mostly hip hop and R&B music. It was a success before it shut down unexpectedly in 2009 although the reason behind this was never fully stated or explained. However is was soon bought by the private investment fund Intermedia Partners who issue double covers quarterly a month with a larger online presence. Its audience is relatively young and are usually urban followers of hip hop culture. Vibe is believed to cover a broader range of interest than its closer competitors who are the source and XXL due to them focusing narrowly on just rap music. Some of the most successful content that was featured in each within magazine includes:
The back page list 20 Questions, Revolutions music reviews and Vibe Confidential, a celebrity gossip column
The front cover points towards the fact that it is suppost to be well known as the singer on the front cover almost covers the two middle letters which suggests that the audience will know what the magazine is without needing to read the title. The letters however are fairly big to probably draw attention to them anyway as you can just work out what the letters spell out and they are white in colour to distinguish that they are important and to stand out against the red darkish background.
The genre of the magazine is clearly shown by the bottom hand corner which advertise where to find that genre of music as well as the main model/singer who is an R&B artist which is again shown by his stereotypical clothes which include the cap to the side, the necklace, tattoos and the leaning posture of the male. This not only promotes the artist but also the magazine as the female audience will buy the magazine from the males attractiveness while the males will buy it because they aspire to by that star who women love. The way that the male is photographed also allows the viewers sight to look at the whole cover as it leads your eyes around the cover.
The title to the left of the magazine draws the audience in as it is a question which the magazine will answer however being the consumer you may wish to find out the answer thus you will need to buy it. The colour is again in white as this promotes the text as important and something that the viewers should focus on. The bar in the bottom left hand corner shows the price and the fact that it is on the front shows that the company are proud of this and shows that they think the price is reasonable for what they want.
The right side is full of teases with various R&B singers mentioned to probably draw the audience in as like I pointed out before the genre is hip hop and R&B so them empathises that fact. Another teaser is shown in a red circle near the top left to draw attention due the bright red colour and shows the mega music issue, this could be a way to try and get the audience/consumer to buy the magazine as it is almost like a bonus type edition and this makes it seem to the diehard fans of the magazine that they need to buy it.

AS Skills Development
I am able to take footage with a video camera which i can edit or manipulate later on in the process using programs such as final cut express. This also allows me to shot any extra footage needed for the production/task and allows the recording of sound if we need it. The camera is one of the main equipment as without one a film, music video, advert etc couldn't be made although the sound could be edited thus the camera is mainly used for visuals.
What sound recording techniques do you have?
I am able to record sound via different devices such as a microphone etc. This helps any production by creating the atmosphere for example i did a horror film trailer and the voices we used was of the victim who was scared and the main villain to show the contrast between them and empathize what genre the production is. So i feel that i am able to edit voice tones and the speed of them.
What skills did you develop using final cut?
The skills that i developed using final cut express include the following:
- Learning to crop clips to fit with the timeline/beat of the music or scenes thus making the clip more effective
- Being able to add the basics such as video clips, music, using the effects that are already on the software etc
- Being able to edit footage so that it can created various effects such as slow motion or changing the colour to black and white
- To use transitions when necessary so that the project blends together and moves well
- To creative titles/credits
- To use the shortcut keys which allows me to make the production quicker and easier hopefully making it more effective.
Did you use a digital camera?
I used a digital camera in order to catch some of the locations on to place within the blog this allowed our group to familiarize ourselves with the locations, to see them first hand and see if they fitted with what we wanted. Thus it helped us to almost analyse the photos and pick the best ones available.
What skills do you have?
During the production i learnt how to develop my creative skills of editing in order to make more effective trailers and to use transitions effectively with effects when needed. I have also enhanced my photographic skills with my video skills allowing me to collect lots of footage for my productions.
What were the good and bad things about the software at AS?
The good things about the software at AS were it was an effective and a quick way to edit video clips that that so we could add a variety of effects to fit any needs. It was also good to have a new programme that held a lot of memory to apply the effects easier and the transitions more effective. However the bad points were that it took a little way to understand how to use the programmes.
How creative were you at As Level?
I feel that are group was creative with the blood and gore by getting a friend who had done a make up cause to do our make up for the production to make it effective. We however weren't very creative with the locations as we used the college and shot around Reepham so i think that if we had shoot elsewhere then in would of been more like a horror film. For example in a forest setting. That said i do feel that because it was around the college it was easier to produce more footage as we didn't have to go anyway far way. We used light well as it was fairly dark in some scenes to give the creepy effect and make it more horrific to fit with the setting. We didn't use a lot of props but for an opening of a film we didn't really need a lot. The characters we used fit the genre well however as we had all the stereotypical characters.
What techniques need you use?
The techniques that we used were a few research questionnaires (primary research) which we left one in the library for people to answer and then we got people to do another face to face so that we could have a range and knew that we would get some answers from at least one. We then selected a video clip comparison where we verbally asked a few people which they liked better and the reason why. I also watched a series of horror genre films to come up with the conventions of a horror film to help the production come along.
What would you improve?
I would probably change the location were we shot as well as edit part of the footage more effectively as when it was put together initially it looked fine buy once the trailer was shown it looked out of place, this was the slow motion change of character or ego from Natalie to Toni. Although it looked OK we wanted it to look amazing so i feel that this clip would be better changed into a different aspect. I would also improve on the actors by getting more reliable ones as we had a slight bit of trouble getting them all together for personal reasons.
How did you use the Internet?
We used the Internet by posting all the information on the blogs that that the production could be marked as well as showing the opening on you tube which people could watch and comment on. We also used it to look up on films and analyse them as well as watch various openings on you tube which we felt fitted with our storyline in some aspect to get the techniques out of them too.
How did you organise your editing?
We each took turn editing the footage and if we werent editing then we would offer ideas and suggestions to the person who was. This allowed each member of the team to take part in the editing and get their own scenes in that they felt were effective, thus allowing us to feel pride towards our production.
What techniques did you use?
The main technique that we wanted to use was used in a noir film, the effect was basically in black and white white certain colours that would be in red, this would allow us to focus on the horror forms and conventions. However this fell through as one of our members had gotten the wrong code so unfortunately it wouldn't work and at the time we couldn't find the proper code to use. We did however use black and white effects for flash backs where the mother was talking and apart from that we didn't use too many effects. We did however use a few in order to make the video opening flow.
What about post production?
I feel that post production didn't go as well as planned as the group had no back up plan and our storyboard wasn't fully developed so it wasn't as effective as i wanted it to be. I do feel that with a bit more planning our production would of been better yet i feel that it did fairly well anyway. The location choice wasn't very well chosen but as i mentioned before it was easier to film at a close location due to lift troubles.
Is it impossible to create an entirely original media text?
I feel that it is impossible as films need to follow the conventions of their selected genre for the audience/consumers to connect with and identify with the genre of the film. Thus i feel that it is almost impossible to create say a horror film without any blood or gore or some one dying. That said a film known as five across the eyes which i have seen before had none of the characters die (except the villain) yet was still classed as a horror and was still effective. Yet this included the conventions of people screaming, blood and getting hurt. So i feel that people can create media texts without all of the aspects yet will find it difficult for people to relater to it without known conventions.
What conventions did you follow?
The conventions that we followed were as follows:
- the blood on the victims
- female characters who are seen as the main gender of horror films
- loud screams
- black clothing for the villain
- a murder of a character
- suspense music

First Film Study
Plot: Birth of a legend. Following King Richard's death in France, archer Robin Longstride, along with Will Scarlett, Alan-a-Dale and Little John, returns to England. They encounter the dying Robert of Locksley, whose party was ambushed by treacherous Godfrey, who hopes to facilitate a French invasion of England. Robin promises the dying knight he will return his sword to his father Walter in Nottingham. Here Walter encourages him to impersonate the dead man to prevent his land being confiscated by the crown, and he finds himself with Marian, a ready-made wife. Hoping to stir baronial opposition to weak King John and allow an easy French take-over, Godfrey worms his way into the king's service as Earl Marshal of England and brutally invades towns under the pretext of collecting Royal taxes.
It relates to the British culture as it is set in England with a notable King Richard in the plot. It also has the typical male hero who is full of courage and the female who is the damsel in distress and the love interest of the main character. These are stereotypical to British films with similar storylines such as Romeo and Juliet, the film also gives us a history lesson about Britain and what went on in the past.
Actors: The main three characters are fairly popular however the real stars within the film are Cate and Russell who have both been in lots of films. Most of Russell's have been action genre films as well probably making him a good fit for the role of the main hero.
Russell Crow who plays Robin Hood is from New Zealand
Cate Blanchett who plays Maid Marien is from Australia
Mark Strong who plays Sir Godfrey is from England
Director: Ridley Scott is a male director who's list of films include the following
The Duellists 1977
Alien 1979
Blade Runner 1982
Legend 1985
Thelma and Louise 1991
Gladiator 2000
Black hawk down 2001
Hannibal 2001
Style: The style of the film is set in the past thus represents almost the history and England, the film is like a story telling the audience what happened years back.
Genre: It is a action film however does contain some romantic/comedy scenes in order to entertain the audience so that they don't get bored quickly and are stuck to the screen. It reminds me of films such as Dragonheart and even Disney films with the typical plot of a hero saving the world and a damsel in distress e.g. sleeping beauty.
Production Company: The film was financed by Universal Pictures which are based in America thus to me maybe suggesting that the film isn't completely British as all it stages would be by British companies however they could have been a number of reason why this didn't happen. For example, there was a lack of them or the companies didn't like the storyline.
Distribution: Universal Pictures also promoted the film distributed films such as:
- The Invention of Lying
- Couples Retreat
- Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant
- The Fourth Kind
- Pirate Radio
- It's Complicated
and was released in the United Kingdom and several other European countries on May 12, in Australia on May 13, and in the United States and Canada on May 14. However it will not be released in Japan until December 2010. The film opened #2 behind Iron Man 2 grossing an estimated $37.1 million. However, the film did do very well and grossed a huge opening internationally, making $75 million outside North America.

Film Study Two
Plot: William Thacker, a travel bookstore owner working and living in Notting Hill, is barely making ends meet. He needs to rent out part of his house, his lodger whom he considers the "stupidest git" in the world. His personal life is equally in shambles as although he has a small group of dear friends, who are on the most part as equally unsuccessful professionally as him, he is divorced - she left him - with no prospect of love on the horizon. His life changes when into his bookstore walks American Anna Scott, arguably the most famous and attractive movie actress in the world. Against the odds, Anna and William become friends with the possibility of romance between the two on the horizon. But the odds of moving their relationship to that final stage are still stacked against them as they live in two different worlds, Anna's under constant public scrutiny of the gossip hungry press, who, along with the public at large, know that Anna is already in a personal relationship with equally famous movie actor, Jeff King
Actors: Most of the main actors are British such as Hugh Grant however the main actress Julia Roberts isn't and is instead American.
Director: The director was Roger Michell who was born in South Africa. He has directed a few films including the following: Enduring Love (2004), Venus (2006) and Morning Glory (2010).
Genre: The genre is a romance comedy which puts me in mind of similar films such as:
- Pretty Woman
- P.S I Love You (2004)
- Beautiful Girls (1996)
- My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)
- There's Something About Mary (1998)
Production Company: The film was funded by the following two companies who funded the film from the very start believing it to be a success, PolyGram Filmed Entertainment and Working Title Films.
Distribution: The film was distributed by Universal Pictures who also distributed Robin Hood 2010. The film had its premiere on the 27 April 1999.
Where it earned $116,089,678 as its overall domestic gross, with a worldwide gross of $363,889,678. It totaled $27.7 million over its opening weekend, an American record. As of May 2007 is the 104th highest grossing film of all time.
At the time, it had become the highest grossing British film.

Music Video Influence
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPBwXKgDTdE
This is a link to Taylor Swifts' music video called Mine. One of our group was watching the video on MTV HITS which funnily enough related to our music video. We discussed a section of the clip where the artist is standing in a forest with hundreds of photos hanging around her. We considered using this idea to make the clips of Carly singing more interesting and reflect the emotion of the video more. The parts of the video which we are talking about, where the photos are hanging from the trees and spinning behind Taylor, are at the following:
0.35 0.45 0.55 1.00 1.04 1.10 1.17 1.31 1.38 1.55 2.07 2.23 2.28 2.39 2.48 2.53 3.11 3.24 3.35 3.39 3.43
This shows that the video constantly goes back to the photo clip which we may take forward into our music video as I feel that it allows the music video to flow. This video was a stroke of luck and one that we feel is quite similar to our own.

Lyrics of our music video
[Verse 1]
How can you describe your sight
to someone whose never seen
Impossible, like trying to feel
when you're numb from head to toe
Like chasing the universe
No awareness of space or time
like trying to describe
when my heart is racing faster than the speed of light
[Chorus]
Why should I have to have a reason to smile
Why should I have to have a reason... to smile
[Verse 2]
So confused taking pieces from different puzzles
time passes by, like any other da
language of the soul
music to me
close up faded dots..step back and take the picture in
[Chorus]
Why should i have to have a resaon to smile
Why should i have to have a reson... to smile
[Bridge]
Letters from the words, words from the sentence
Sentence from the page, a chapter in the book
Running over the logic again in my head
It doesn't make sense.
The story ends.
[Chorus]
Why should i have to have a reason to smile
Why should i have to have a reason to ... smile
Seeing the lyrics made the group feel that a more story type video was best in order to capture all of the emotion and the feelings that we feel the music produces however before hand we had throught just to produce a video that wasnt linear. Luckily we looked at the lyrics and annotated them in order to see what direction we wanted the video to take. Thus we feel that with a linear production the audience will interact with the video more aswell as enjoy it.

Second CD Album Analysis
I will be looking at the album minutes to midnight by the band Linkin Park as I analyzed their music video a while back thus I can compare the two slightly and be able to analyze the cover with a better understanding then an album that I haven't heard a single song off of. It is the bands third album and was released through Warner bros records. It went straight to number one in the United States as well as the United Kingdom and a staggering fourteen more. I choose to use this album as it has the song "What I've done" on it which as I mentioned before I analyzed. The colour of the album is fairly simply which seems to be a trend in their albums, they don't use bright colours but seem to use various shades and variations of black, white and grey. This album however includes all three as the background on the cover is pure white, the ground is grey while the text and the silhouettes of the band members are black. This gives a calm sensation to the cover yet to me it doesn't seem that it would attract too many passersby due to the darkish colours. On the other hand the band is known for these colours so the album wouldn't need to be bright and attractive as the fans of the band would know their trend.
It isn't exactly clear what the band members are wearing due to them being almost like their shadows. Yet they seem to be wearing simple clothes such as jeans and jackets as this is there typical wear in most of the albums videos. That said however I do feel that the audience doesn't really need to know what the band is wearing as their clothes aren't what sell their records, their voices do which is the statement that I feel could possibly be given. The background of the image is just purely bland as there is nothing in the background whatsoever however the bottom of the image is slightly rocky suggesting that they could be in a desert like in the video "What I've Done" thus this could link in with the front cover of the album showing that the video is directly affected by the video. This could show that the bands main song or vocal point is that certain song or that they expect the audience to relate the video to the album cover thus buying it.
The shot of the cover is a long shot so that the band is all included however they are quite spread out allowing the audience to see the whole photo as each band member is on a different part of the image allowing you to view the image. That said the main singer is slightly more apart from the group (member three from the left) possibly showing that he is the main attraction.
The only words on the album are of the artist and the title of the album which is similar to the pink album cover that I have analyzed as well. This seems to be a recurring factor and something that I think I would stick with for the album cover that I am going to produce.
The overall tips and suggestions that I feel the album cover gives include:
Having the cover only mild colours which I like however I would probably have just a black and white image with coloured text so that it will attract audiences and crowds quicker as our artists isn't as well known thus her audience wouldn't even exist yet let alone know what her stereotypical things are. Another factor is having a clean background with maybe a hint at what the video is of or from however I feel that this may give too much away so I would rather have the image taken in a studio as I feel that this would be more professional. This also excludes the other point of not showing the artists as like I pointed out before, my groups artist isn't well known so they would need to make some kind of connection with her.
I personally like the cover as I feel that it is different from the typical bright coloured albums however that said I do feel that the colours attract more of an audience and thus I feel that they are more likely to sell and will then be more profitable. I would change the background though in order to make it more interesting as a feel that the audience need o be drawn to a album as a clear background image wouldn't do that.

First CD Album Analysis
The CD image is by one of the artist's videos that I evaluated earlier on, this artist is Alecia Moore or better known by her stage name Pink. She has released a total of five albums however I am looking at her latest one called Funhouse as I feel that it will represent the trends of CD covers better than the other four due to being the closest one to date. This in turn will help me with ideas on how I should style the image for my own artist.Firstly I'm looking at the colour if the album which is simply two colours for the background being gold and red which are the colours that Pink's clothes are. The only different colour on the front cover is the white horse which stands out from the rest. The colours almost contradict each other as red is a colour for anger or sexual desires yet white is a sign of purity thus Pink is almost using the colours to fit with her personality that she is known for. As I mentioned in the music videos Pink rebels against most view points and uses her own ideology which I feel she is also doing with her album cover thus showing the rebel that people love about the female. However the colours are also seen as a fairground and the house would be seen on the merry go round thus it could just fit with the album title which is funhouse, just like the merry go round a funhouse would be in a fairground thus the colours used may signify this factor.
Pinks outfit also fits this fairground theme as she is wearing the typical showgirl type outfit who would be near a circus in a fairground that contains clowns which funnily enough is mentioned a lot in one of her songs with the same name "used to be a funhouse but now it's full of evil clowns" I believe that this album cover was designed especially for the song Funhouse which is the same title as the album as well as having the colours and clothes match the theme. Although there are no images whatsoever of any clowns on or in the album which may suggest that this isn't the reason for the design, however I do like the idea of matching the song with the album cover in some way as the audience can then relate to both the song and the album thus will be more likely to buy it. There is another song on the album called crystal ball which again fits with the whole fairground theme.
The artist is shown on the horse with an arm and a leg in the arm possibly showing her enjoyment of fun that she is hinted at having by her facial expression. Her position allows the audience to view the whole cover as you are instantly attracted to the white horse and then Pink yet her leg also takes your eyes into the top left of image showing you everything. This will help my group by allowing us to write ideas on what our CD could include and techniques that we could use. The shot of Pink is shown from the side although you can pretty much see all that you need to by the left side of the artist such as her emotions, her position, what she is doing and what she is wearing.
The only words on the cover are the artists name and the title of the album which I feel is a statement simply saying this is her album and that's really all you need to know. A lot of other artists use this technique however a few have been known to write a phrase or a title that doesn't match the album yet this is commonly seen by artists who are quite famous or well known at the time thus for our artist we should stick to just the name and album title.
Overall from what I can see from this album the ideas that she gives are the following:
To use the artist as a main focus point so that the audience will know who they are as they may only hear the song on the radio thus is allows the audience to connect with the singer. To use only a few colours so that no distraction is taken away from the artist. Have the title of the song or some relation to the song on the front cover e.g. the horse links to a fairground and the song title is the album title.
I personally like the album cover for its simplicity as it attracts the audience without too much effort although I do feel that she could of used possibly a better picture then her on the horse as it is connected with a fairground yet I feel that maybe a clown would have been a better choice or something along those lines. I do feel that a clown would take the attention away from Pink yet at the same time attract different types of people who maybe wouldn't go for a female artist. For example an early twenties male, this idea on the other hand could backfire and lose sales. I have learnt from this that I will need to evaluate every decision on the album before agreeing to it as one false move could decide the albums success.
