First Film Study
Plot: Birth of a legend. Following King Richard's death in France, archer Robin Longstride, along with Will Scarlett, Alan-a-Dale and Little John, returns to England. They encounter the dying Robert of Locksley, whose party was ambushed by treacherous Godfrey, who hopes to facilitate a French invasion of England. Robin promises the dying knight he will return his sword to his father Walter in Nottingham. Here Walter encourages him to impersonate the dead man to prevent his land being confiscated by the crown, and he finds himself with Marian, a ready-made wife. Hoping to stir baronial opposition to weak King John and allow an easy French take-over, Godfrey worms his way into the king's service as Earl Marshal of England and brutally invades towns under the pretext of collecting Royal taxes.
It relates to the British culture as it is set in England with a notable King Richard in the plot. It also has the typical male hero who is full of courage and the female who is the damsel in distress and the love interest of the main character. These are stereotypical to British films with similar storylines such as Romeo and Juliet, the film also gives us a history lesson about Britain and what went on in the past.
Actors: The main three characters are fairly popular however the real stars within the film are Cate and Russell who have both been in lots of films. Most of Russell's have been action genre films as well probably making him a good fit for the role of the main hero.
Russell Crow who plays Robin Hood is from New Zealand
Cate Blanchett who plays Maid Marien is from Australia
Mark Strong who plays Sir Godfrey is from England
Director: Ridley Scott is a male director who's list of films include the following
The Duellists 1977
Alien 1979
Blade Runner 1982
Legend 1985
Thelma and Louise 1991
Gladiator 2000
Black hawk down 2001
Hannibal 2001
Style: The style of the film is set in the past thus represents almost the history and England, the film is like a story telling the audience what happened years back.
Genre: It is a action film however does contain some romantic/comedy scenes in order to entertain the audience so that they don't get bored quickly and are stuck to the screen. It reminds me of films such as Dragonheart and even Disney films with the typical plot of a hero saving the world and a damsel in distress e.g. sleeping beauty.
Production Company: The film was financed by Universal Pictures which are based in America thus to me maybe suggesting that the film isn't completely British as all it stages would be by British companies however they could have been a number of reason why this didn't happen. For example, there was a lack of them or the companies didn't like the storyline.
Distribution: Universal Pictures also promoted the film distributed films such as:
- The Invention of Lying
- Couples Retreat
- Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant
- The Fourth Kind
- Pirate Radio
- It's Complicated
and was released in the United Kingdom and several other European countries on May 12, in Australia on May 13, and in the United States and Canada on May 14. However it will not be released in Japan until December 2010. The film opened #2 behind Iron Man 2 grossing an estimated $37.1 million. However, the film did do very well and grossed a huge opening internationally, making $75 million outside North America.

Film Study Two
Plot: William Thacker, a travel bookstore owner working and living in Notting Hill, is barely making ends meet. He needs to rent out part of his house, his lodger whom he considers the "stupidest git" in the world. His personal life is equally in shambles as although he has a small group of dear friends, who are on the most part as equally unsuccessful professionally as him, he is divorced - she left him - with no prospect of love on the horizon. His life changes when into his bookstore walks American Anna Scott, arguably the most famous and attractive movie actress in the world. Against the odds, Anna and William become friends with the possibility of romance between the two on the horizon. But the odds of moving their relationship to that final stage are still stacked against them as they live in two different worlds, Anna's under constant public scrutiny of the gossip hungry press, who, along with the public at large, know that Anna is already in a personal relationship with equally famous movie actor, Jeff King
Actors: Most of the main actors are British such as Hugh Grant however the main actress Julia Roberts isn't and is instead American.
Director: The director was Roger Michell who was born in South Africa. He has directed a few films including the following: Enduring Love (2004), Venus (2006) and Morning Glory (2010).
Genre: The genre is a romance comedy which puts me in mind of similar films such as:
- Pretty Woman
- P.S I Love You (2004)
- Beautiful Girls (1996)
- My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)
- There's Something About Mary (1998)
Production Company: The film was funded by the following two companies who funded the film from the very start believing it to be a success, PolyGram Filmed Entertainment and Working Title Films.
Distribution: The film was distributed by Universal Pictures who also distributed Robin Hood 2010. The film had its premiere on the 27 April 1999.
Where it earned $116,089,678 as its overall domestic gross, with a worldwide gross of $363,889,678. It totaled $27.7 million over its opening weekend, an American record. As of May 2007 is the 104th highest grossing film of all time.
At the time, it had become the highest grossing British film.

Music Video Influence
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPBwXKgDTdE
This is a link to Taylor Swifts' music video called Mine. One of our group was watching the video on MTV HITS which funnily enough related to our music video. We discussed a section of the clip where the artist is standing in a forest with hundreds of photos hanging around her. We considered using this idea to make the clips of Carly singing more interesting and reflect the emotion of the video more. The parts of the video which we are talking about, where the photos are hanging from the trees and spinning behind Taylor, are at the following:
0.35 0.45 0.55 1.00 1.04 1.10 1.17 1.31 1.38 1.55 2.07 2.23 2.28 2.39 2.48 2.53 3.11 3.24 3.35 3.39 3.43
This shows that the video constantly goes back to the photo clip which we may take forward into our music video as I feel that it allows the music video to flow. This video was a stroke of luck and one that we feel is quite similar to our own.

Lyrics of our music video
[Verse 1]
How can you describe your sight
to someone whose never seen
Impossible, like trying to feel
when you're numb from head to toe
Like chasing the universe
No awareness of space or time
like trying to describe
when my heart is racing faster than the speed of light
[Chorus]
Why should I have to have a reason to smile
Why should I have to have a reason... to smile
[Verse 2]
So confused taking pieces from different puzzles
time passes by, like any other da
language of the soul
music to me
close up faded dots..step back and take the picture in
[Chorus]
Why should i have to have a resaon to smile
Why should i have to have a reson... to smile
[Bridge]
Letters from the words, words from the sentence
Sentence from the page, a chapter in the book
Running over the logic again in my head
It doesn't make sense.
The story ends.
[Chorus]
Why should i have to have a reason to smile
Why should i have to have a reason to ... smile
Seeing the lyrics made the group feel that a more story type video was best in order to capture all of the emotion and the feelings that we feel the music produces however before hand we had throught just to produce a video that wasnt linear. Luckily we looked at the lyrics and annotated them in order to see what direction we wanted the video to take. Thus we feel that with a linear production the audience will interact with the video more aswell as enjoy it.

Second CD Album Analysis
I will be looking at the album minutes to midnight by the band Linkin Park as I analyzed their music video a while back thus I can compare the two slightly and be able to analyze the cover with a better understanding then an album that I haven't heard a single song off of. It is the bands third album and was released through Warner bros records. It went straight to number one in the United States as well as the United Kingdom and a staggering fourteen more. I choose to use this album as it has the song "What I've done" on it which as I mentioned before I analyzed. The colour of the album is fairly simply which seems to be a trend in their albums, they don't use bright colours but seem to use various shades and variations of black, white and grey. This album however includes all three as the background on the cover is pure white, the ground is grey while the text and the silhouettes of the band members are black. This gives a calm sensation to the cover yet to me it doesn't seem that it would attract too many passersby due to the darkish colours. On the other hand the band is known for these colours so the album wouldn't need to be bright and attractive as the fans of the band would know their trend.
It isn't exactly clear what the band members are wearing due to them being almost like their shadows. Yet they seem to be wearing simple clothes such as jeans and jackets as this is there typical wear in most of the albums videos. That said however I do feel that the audience doesn't really need to know what the band is wearing as their clothes aren't what sell their records, their voices do which is the statement that I feel could possibly be given. The background of the image is just purely bland as there is nothing in the background whatsoever however the bottom of the image is slightly rocky suggesting that they could be in a desert like in the video "What I've Done" thus this could link in with the front cover of the album showing that the video is directly affected by the video. This could show that the bands main song or vocal point is that certain song or that they expect the audience to relate the video to the album cover thus buying it.
The shot of the cover is a long shot so that the band is all included however they are quite spread out allowing the audience to see the whole photo as each band member is on a different part of the image allowing you to view the image. That said the main singer is slightly more apart from the group (member three from the left) possibly showing that he is the main attraction.
The only words on the album are of the artist and the title of the album which is similar to the pink album cover that I have analyzed as well. This seems to be a recurring factor and something that I think I would stick with for the album cover that I am going to produce.
The overall tips and suggestions that I feel the album cover gives include:
Having the cover only mild colours which I like however I would probably have just a black and white image with coloured text so that it will attract audiences and crowds quicker as our artists isn't as well known thus her audience wouldn't even exist yet let alone know what her stereotypical things are. Another factor is having a clean background with maybe a hint at what the video is of or from however I feel that this may give too much away so I would rather have the image taken in a studio as I feel that this would be more professional. This also excludes the other point of not showing the artists as like I pointed out before, my groups artist isn't well known so they would need to make some kind of connection with her.
I personally like the cover as I feel that it is different from the typical bright coloured albums however that said I do feel that the colours attract more of an audience and thus I feel that they are more likely to sell and will then be more profitable. I would change the background though in order to make it more interesting as a feel that the audience need o be drawn to a album as a clear background image wouldn't do that.

First CD Album Analysis
The CD image is by one of the artist's videos that I evaluated earlier on, this artist is Alecia Moore or better known by her stage name Pink. She has released a total of five albums however I am looking at her latest one called Funhouse as I feel that it will represent the trends of CD covers better than the other four due to being the closest one to date. This in turn will help me with ideas on how I should style the image for my own artist.Firstly I'm looking at the colour if the album which is simply two colours for the background being gold and red which are the colours that Pink's clothes are. The only different colour on the front cover is the white horse which stands out from the rest. The colours almost contradict each other as red is a colour for anger or sexual desires yet white is a sign of purity thus Pink is almost using the colours to fit with her personality that she is known for. As I mentioned in the music videos Pink rebels against most view points and uses her own ideology which I feel she is also doing with her album cover thus showing the rebel that people love about the female. However the colours are also seen as a fairground and the house would be seen on the merry go round thus it could just fit with the album title which is funhouse, just like the merry go round a funhouse would be in a fairground thus the colours used may signify this factor.
Pinks outfit also fits this fairground theme as she is wearing the typical showgirl type outfit who would be near a circus in a fairground that contains clowns which funnily enough is mentioned a lot in one of her songs with the same name "used to be a funhouse but now it's full of evil clowns" I believe that this album cover was designed especially for the song Funhouse which is the same title as the album as well as having the colours and clothes match the theme. Although there are no images whatsoever of any clowns on or in the album which may suggest that this isn't the reason for the design, however I do like the idea of matching the song with the album cover in some way as the audience can then relate to both the song and the album thus will be more likely to buy it. There is another song on the album called crystal ball which again fits with the whole fairground theme.
The artist is shown on the horse with an arm and a leg in the arm possibly showing her enjoyment of fun that she is hinted at having by her facial expression. Her position allows the audience to view the whole cover as you are instantly attracted to the white horse and then Pink yet her leg also takes your eyes into the top left of image showing you everything. This will help my group by allowing us to write ideas on what our CD could include and techniques that we could use. The shot of Pink is shown from the side although you can pretty much see all that you need to by the left side of the artist such as her emotions, her position, what she is doing and what she is wearing.
The only words on the cover are the artists name and the title of the album which I feel is a statement simply saying this is her album and that's really all you need to know. A lot of other artists use this technique however a few have been known to write a phrase or a title that doesn't match the album yet this is commonly seen by artists who are quite famous or well known at the time thus for our artist we should stick to just the name and album title.
Overall from what I can see from this album the ideas that she gives are the following:
To use the artist as a main focus point so that the audience will know who they are as they may only hear the song on the radio thus is allows the audience to connect with the singer. To use only a few colours so that no distraction is taken away from the artist. Have the title of the song or some relation to the song on the front cover e.g. the horse links to a fairground and the song title is the album title.
I personally like the album cover for its simplicity as it attracts the audience without too much effort although I do feel that she could of used possibly a better picture then her on the horse as it is connected with a fairground yet I feel that maybe a clown would have been a better choice or something along those lines. I do feel that a clown would take the attention away from Pink yet at the same time attract different types of people who maybe wouldn't go for a female artist. For example an early twenties male, this idea on the other hand could backfire and lose sales. I have learnt from this that I will need to evaluate every decision on the album before agreeing to it as one false move could decide the albums success.
